ATLAS COPCO TUNNEL DRILL ON TRANSPORT
INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF ATLAS COPCO?
Atlas Copco initially made products for railways. Around 1900, the first compressors, tools and masonry drills were developed. Now they are the world leader in these and many other products.
Atlas was founded in 1873 in Stockholm, Sweden, to provide Swedish Rail with all kinds of equipment for building a Swedish railway. But with the rapid growth of the Swedish railways, Atlas had already begun a strategic shift in the mid-1880s to the production of more advanced products, such as steam engines and boilers.
In the early 1890s, an engineer named Gustaf Ryd developed a pneumatic caulking hammer and a riveter. These machines proved to be of great value and also had to produce spare parts and replacements.
Around 1909, the pneumatic tools and air compressors division was rapidly expanded. As early as 1904, the company developed the first rock drill. The other production lines were gradually phased out. Diesel activity declined sharply and had to be discontinued in 1948.
